FireEye Addresses Anti-botnet Protection Strategies at Key Industry Forums

Dr. Michael J. Staggs Discusses Botnet Behaviors, the Storm Bot, and Methods for Protecting Business Critical Resources from Infiltration

Milpitas, Calif.—March 12, 2008 — FireEye, Inc., the leader in global anti-botnet protection, today announced that Dr. Michael J. Staggs, one of the company's chief security investigators, continues to build awareness about the growing botnet pandemic and effective anti-botnet protection strategies through speaking engagements at key industry events. Dr. Staggs will discuss "Putting an End to Data Leakage by Botnet" at the Data Protection Summit on March 12, 2008, and he presents "The 'Storm' No One Sees...Storm Bot" at the Colorado Information Manager's Association (CIMA) 2008 Educational Conference on April 16, 2008. Dr. Staggs also spoke last week at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference (ETech) on the topic "Botnets: Current State of the Net."

FireEye's unique anti-botnet protection solution combines a global botnet discovery and analysis service network coupled with on-premise anti-botnet security appliances to deliver the industry's most comprehensive and accurate protection against worldwide botnets. FireEye leverages its unique visibility into botnet activities to educate the market about botnet behavior, attacks, and vulnerabilities, helping organizations protect their critical assets, people and intellectual property.

"Botnets threaten the very foundation of the Internet economy," said Dr. Michael J. Staggs, chief investigator at FireEye, Inc. "The surgical precision with which they are used to execute cyber crimes along with the complex and deceptive methodologies used by hackers to create and utilize these armies, creates a substantial challenge for today's IT and security professionals. Our extensive botnet research and combined global and local FireEye Botwall solution give us a clear viewpoint on this pandemic that we can bring to the industry through valuable forums such as the Data Protection Summit, CIMA and ETech."

Dr. Staggs' discussion on the topic "Putting an end to Data Leakage by Botnet" at the Data Protection Summit will delve further into how botnets drive active data leakage by creating a nearly undetectable conduit for data mining within organizations. Discussion will include overviews of botnet forensics, virtualization practices, automated analysis, malware characteristics and C&C structures. Dr. Staggs' session is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12 from 10:20 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport, in Irvine, Calif. The event runs from March 11 through March 13, 2008.

At the CIMA 2008 Educational Conference, Dr. Staggs, delves into the Storm Bot, a remote control program that has infected millions of computers in workplaces, homes, schools and beyond. The Storm Bot is extremely difficult to detect and is alone responsible for nearly half of the immense volume of SPAM received by people everyday. Attendees of this session will learn what the Storm Bot is, how it works, the extent of the global infection, and how to detect and remove it from the network. Dr. Staggs' discussion is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. The event is scheduled to take place at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort Conference Center, in Colorado Springs, Colo. from April 16 through April 18, 2008.

The rise of botnets, the role they play in today's most sinister cyber crimes, the underground economy they support, botnet behaviors, and the investigative process required to detect and eliminate botnet infiltration were topics comprising Dr. Staggs' presentation at ETech entitled, "Botnets: Current State of the Net."
