Hats off to the legal department at FireEye, which was recently named “Legal Department of the Year” by The Recorder, for receiving high praise from the Financial Times. Each year for the past decade, the publication has recognized leading legal teams with its Innovative Legal Award program. The awards are primarily given to law firms for innovation, but one in-house legal team is selected each year and this time, the FireEye legal department made the short list of 10 finalists.
General Counsel Alexa King’s team had plenty of strong competition from much larger, more mature legal departments from companies including General Electric, Hershey, NASDAQ and MasterCard. The FireEye legal team has plenty to boast about - from managing the legal aspects of our IPO and Secondary Offering, to the Mandiant acquisition, to heling us expand into 60 countries worldwide, and then obtaining the Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act certification for our technology, our legal department has played a role in many of the company’s largest accomplishments. Add to that the “Innovative Ideas” contest that the team originated and continues to sponsor yearly to encourage employees to submit suggestions. The goal of the contest? To give the best ideas visibility, and to provide a forum for sharing ideas to improve the company. All of this underscores why our legal department gets high marks for going the extra mile to innovate.
These awards are regarded as the best researched in the market and present a unique analysis of the legal industry. It’s the only ranking of lawyers that’s done based on their innovative work and their innovative approaches to running their legal departments as businesses. In addition to company lawyers working in-house, categories include corporate, litigation, finance and private client work, corporate strategy, client service and value resourcing.
A Financial Times write-up on the awards mentioned that the FireEye corporate legal team “also wins plaudits in the FT’s in-house lawyers ranking. This team has set up a system that tracks ideas, encouraging innovation from a broad range of people within the business.”
Team member Jill Passalacqua said the team tries to remain nimble and respond to FireEye’s changing business needs and growth as both evolve, and this recognition underscores our legal department’s success in doing just that.
