Applying Threat Intelligence to Industrial Control Systems Security

Increasingly, industrial companies and those operating critical infrastructure are finding themselves vulnerable to external intruders with malicious intent. The SANS 2016 ICS Survey Report "Where Are We Now?" indicated that 67 percent of global industrial control systems (ICS) professionals surveyed across all industrial sectors perceive severe or high levels of cyber threat to control systems – a 43 percent increase from the 2015 survey results.

With perceived threats to ICS operators rising so quickly, leveraging threat intelligence is critical when securing infrastructure so that risk can be proactively assessed, context can be placed around alerts for prioritization and attacks can be detected and contained.

Recent FireEye iSIGHT Intelligence reports – such as IRONGATE, an ICS-focused malware crafted to manipulate a specific industrial process running within a simulated Siemens control system environment – put perceived threats into context and turn concern into action.

To dive deeper into how technology, intelligence, and expertise can be applied to ICS security, we will be hosting a webinar with our partners at Belden/Tripwire on Wednesday, July 27 at 11:00 AM PST / 2:00 PM EST. Insights will be presented by ICS leaders:

  • David Meltzer, chief research officer, Belden/Tripwire
  • Ryan Brichant, VP, CTO, IoT/Global Critical Infrastructure, FireEye
  • Sean McBride, lead analyst for critical infrastructure, FireEye iSIGHT Intelligence

Tune in to the webinar to hear them explain what threat indicators to watch for and offer practical techniques for protecting the uptime, reliability, and safety of PLC, RTU, IED, and DCS equipment.
