UK National Lottery Operator Camelot Deploys FireEye Technology to Offer Protection Against Targeted Cyber Attacks

Camelot enhances existing multi-layered security to protect brand and National Lottery assets

FireEye Web Malware Protection System (MPS) was added to the organisation's existing multi-layered security defences in the wake of last year's flurry of targeted attacks on high-profile organisations.

The National Lottery has created over 2,800 millionaires, generated more than £27 billion for The National Lottery Good Causes, and is a leader in the field of digital lottery innovation and e-commerce. However, following the spate of targeted attacks in 2011 on high-profile corporations around the globe, Camelot's senior management reevaluated their own resilience to the new breed of advanced targeted attacks. Mindful of its obligation to protect its network and players, connected as it is to over 29,000 retail terminals around the UK, Paul Jay, head of security and information, conducted a search for a solution, culminating in the purchase of the FireEye Web MPS technology.

Following rigorous proof-of-concept testing, the FireEye Web MPS appliances were installed in Q4 of 2011, and were customised and refined to optimise the solution to Camelot's specific environment. Commenting on its impact on the business, Paul Jay head of security and information, Camelot, says: "FireEye adds another weapon to our armoury of multi-layered security solutions, and offers reassurance and insurance against the new breed of advanced persistent threats. It also is a vital aid in collating, informing, reporting, and managing threats in compliance with the processes required to meet internal and external regulations set down by our regulator, the National Lottery Commission."

Paul Davis, director for Europe at FireEye, added: "Camelot operates four of the top fast-moving consumer goods brands in the UK and is working at the forefront of the European Lottery Security Federation to create a blueprint for other lotteries worldwide. Having such a high-profile organisation acknowledge the importance of proactively protecting themselves against this new breed of targeted attacks will hopefully encourage other organisations to take similar steps to protect both their own data and their customers' data in a responsible manner."
